Hallelujah
The Darker Personality
As a result of being pushed to his limits during the Human Reform League’s Super Soldier experiments, Allelujah developed an alter persona, whom he calls Hallelujah. This alter ego represents everything Allelujah is not; cruel, sadistic, and bloodthristy. Hallelujah often dominates Allelujah when the latter is crippled by the brain waves of Soma Peries. The visual cues for this is when his hair covers his right eye, instead of the normal coverage of the left.
Like most anime, this aspect of Allelujah’s character does not make much scientific sense. It does however, offer us with a malicious form of entertainment. I have to admit I am guilty of enjoying the moments when Hallelujah appears and torments Allelujah. Maybe it’s because I have a secret enjoyment of other’s pain? Or maybe Hallelujah strikes up such a difference and strength in Allelujah’s body that one cannot help but marvel at his actions.
A key point to note, though, is that Hallelujah often appears to save Allelujah from trouble. Most of the time this involves Allelujah’s encounters with Soma Peries, as the brain waves generated from Peries’s enhancements give Allelujah enough pain to blackout. Hallelujah even tells Allelujah that the former is there to do what the latter cannot, thereby saving Allelujah from becoming tainted.
In the final episode, when Allelujah and Hallelujah combined to form the pefect soldier, Allelujah sustained an injury to his right eye, and as he pushes Soma Peries back, Hallelujah bids Allelujah good bye. And from this point on, it can be fairly certain Hallelujah has died, and in his own words, moved on ahead of Allelujah.
As the only hair-flopping, personality-switching character I am familiar with, I can’t say exactly what likeness Allelujah/Hallelujah has with the other ones, but no doubt Hallelujah is an alter character to be remembered.
